ATTENTION!
IMMIGRATION REFORM
News Update!
April 11, 2006 - We are witnessing historic moments for the immigrant
community of the United States. Republican and Democrat
senators have not reached an agreement. We are hoping to
give you more details in the following weeks.
In the meantime we can inform you that the proposed bill in the
Senate presents the following possibilities for
undocumented immigrants:
- The legalization of those immigrants that have resided in the
United States for more than five years, without having to leave
the country to be processed.
- The legalization of those immigrants that have resided in the
United States for two to five years. However, these immigrants
will have to leave the country and be processed at the border
until they are approved.
- Those immigrants that have been in the country for less than
two years will have to leave the country and wait for legal means
to reenter the country.
There may be many changes and restrictions added before the law
is signed by the president, but at this time we believe that the possible
requirements for the first two above-mentioned groups
will be the following:
- Present evidence that proves your residency and qualifies
you under the law.
- Pay a fine of $2,000.
- Pay back taxes for the years you have resided in USA.
- Present a clean criminal record.
- Learn the English language.
We hope that in the following weeks the United States Congress
will be able to reconcile the vast differences that exist between
the proposed bill in the Senate and the proposed bill in the House
of Representatives.
What can you do in the meantime? Maintain
pressure on Congress: participate in marches, pacifist protests,
send letters to your congressmen via fax or email, give them a
call, write letters to the editors of newspapers, and above all,
keep yourself updated with the last news.

March 30, 2006 - This is to inform you that there are several
legislative projects under consideration by the United States Congress.
Some of the clauses can affect you negatively while other provisions,
if approved, will offer you the opportunity of becoming a permanent
resident in the United States.
Our community is anxiously awaiting a new law that will benefit
more than 11 million undocumented immigrants presently in this
country. We have visited our Congressmen in Washington DC, pleading
for a reform that will benefit our community. Unfortunately, they
have not approved any legislation yet and continue to debate and
consider the various proposals. Once Congress (the House
of Representatives and the Senate) come to an agreement, the legislative
project will be presented to the President of the United States,
if he signs and approves the legislation, it will be implemented
as a new law.
Please be patient and careful of people that may want to take
advantage of your situation.
We want to assure you that we will monitor this process in order
to provide you with the best legal service. At this time,
we are unable to give specific information because there are no
regulations, not even a new law signed by the president.
As soon as there is an Immigration
law that will impact your legal status in any way, our office
will send you a notification by mail. Please inform us
if you have any change of address. If
you have questions, please call our office to set up an appointment
to consult with Attorney Anayancy R. Housman.
